The Blacksmith's Gift, An Orphan's Promise, and A Carpenter's Legacy elegantly retell the Santa Claus stories - re-imagining them in a more realistic world, while preserving belief, joy and wonder for younger children. These books can be read independently as bedtime stories or as a series; all examine Santa, the Christmas holiday, and how we create hope, success and meaning.
In A Carpenter's Legacy, the lesson that life can become what you choose to believe is imparted to children in a hospital over Christmas by Grandfather Ian, a doctor who, along with his friend Prita, was part of a toy making group of orphans in Norway who called themselves Santa s Elves and were taught by a kindly carpenter named Mr. Kloss.

A Carpenter Legacy A Christmas Story Dan T Davis Jan Davis Steve Ferchaud 9780972597784 Books Reviews
This beautifully crafted story is actually 2 stories in one, you have a story that takes place in the present and the wonderful world of Santa in the past woven together seamlessly. The beautiful illustrations offer a glimpse into the world while leaving plenty to the reader's imagination, so you can craft your own version of this mystical place.
I made the mistake of getting the last book first and while the wonderfully crafted story stands on its own, I was left wanting to know more of the wondrous land of Santa. Don't make the same mistake I did and buy all 3 books so you can become totally immersed in the story of Santa.
Dan Davis has given us a beautiful book suitable for ages 9 - 15 according to the designation on the copyright page. The story is touching, the illustrations are perfect. This is a hardcover with a dustjacket and has the recommendation of Lynn Johnston, creator of the comic strip, For Better or For Worse. It's a gorgeous book inside and out.
The closing section with questions from a child to a parent (page 83) is possibly my favorite part. It ends with these words Rock the horse. Ring the bell. Build a dollhouse. Give a promise. Make a snow angel. Believe in fairies. Keep moving forward. Wish upon a star. Have faith. Live life. Catch snowflakes with your tongue. ... IMAGINE
Well done, Dan!
A Carpenter's Legacy is the third and final book in Dan T. Davis' Christmas series. Davis writes about worlds that are real, evoking the feeling of two orphans aboard a steamship in 1920; a village in Norway; and a modern-day hospital. It is just this real-world portrayal that makes the book captivating. Santa Claus is Santa Kloss--or Papa to those who know him--a humble Norwegian carpenter whose generous heart and spirit have become legend. Year after year, he delivers handmade toys to orphans and needy children. But it is not just the toys that make him endearing. It is the way he takes children under his wing, gives them a home, a trade, and most important, helps them grow emotionally.
Like his settings, Davis creates memorable characters with real challenges and emotions. Their desires and longings will resonate with children and adults alike. The stunning watercolor illustrations of Steve Ferchaud complement the tale perfectly.
A Carpenter's Legacy is at once a collection of stories, and stories within stories, about gifts bestowed from parent to child. These multi-layered tales come together in powerful themes about the healing power of stories and belief, the power of the imagination to transcend challenges and find joy, and the importance of never giving up hope.
As with the other two books, A Carpenter's Legacy stands alone, but why stop there. Triple your pleasure for the holidays and all year round, and enjoy this book with the other two. Five Stars!
In America, an elderly doctor entertains his grandchildren and the young patients at his hospital, as he does each Christmas, with stories of his younger days in Norway as apprentice to a most unusual carpenter. This Christmas is different, though...the doctor's wife is a patient in the hospital, near death. How can he reconcile his sorrow with the joy of the Christmas season...and can he dare hope for a miracle?
This is the third volume in a trilogy of Christmas stories by Dan T. Davis The Blacksmith's Gift A Christmas Story,An Orphan's Promise A Christmas Story, and A Carpenter's Legacy A Christmas Story.
In these three stories, Davis offers a fresh perspective on Christmas, and given the plethora of books in this genre, that's a notable achievement. These tales feel as if they might have sprung from an anecdote someone's grandfather carried across the ocean from the old country and shared every so often at family gatherings, embroidering the tale bit by bit until it blossomed into a legend that transcended generations and was carefully passed down from parent to child. In a sea of Christmas stories that feel manufactured and trite, these books are, by contrast, genuine, warm, honest, and substantial.
It wouldn't be accurate to call these children's books. They're family books. The stories speak to all generations and reveal the triumph of love and joy over loneliness and despair. They take on some weighty issues in a manner that's accessible to both children and adults. They're filled with wonder, and generosity, and hope, and even a miracle or two. These are the sort of books you gather everyone on the sofa to read aloud, with a fire crackling in the hearth and warm cups of cocoa all around. The illustrations are lavish and complement the stories perfectly.
A Carpenter's Legacy received the 2011 Benjamin Franklin Silver Award for excellence in independently-published juvenile/young adult fiction. Pick up a few copies and stash them away as stocking stuffers for friends and family. You'll be glad you did...and so will they.
Great story!
