This book was written by a Confederate soldier who proudly defended his home from attack by enemy forces; not by some pampered General but by someone who was there on the field firing a weapon and witnessing the horrible butchery of the American Civil War.John Casler takes you through his entire experience of the war from the time he signed up until the end of fighting. You not only read his battlefield accounts but you get soldier stories such as stealing whiskey from the quartermaster and sneaking back home to visit friends and family despite occupation by enemy forces.
It's well written and seems more accurate than Civil War accounts by other soldiers, such as the book "Company H" by Samuel Watkins. In fact, at the beginning of the book the text of multiple letters from other Civil War soldiers and officers of both sides attest to the accuracy of Casler's battlefield accounts.
The book itself is pretty much literally a copy of the second edition that was published in 1906. The font appears to be the same as the font of that 1906 edition and there are library stamps in the book from the copied book. Despite these things it's still a very enjoyable read.

Tells how the Civil War was seen through the eyes of a private in the Confederate Army. Not a book about the "glory of war" but the real facts about the fighting and what the soldiers went through. A must for any Civil War buff and should be recommended reading for any study of the Civil War. I believe it is the only book written about the Civil War from an enlisted soldier from either side.

Excellent first-hand information on one of the top three military minds in U.S. military history. I have really enjoyed reading what The War Between the States was like from the perspective of an enlisted soldier - very informative.
