After not having seen her grandmother for two years, Annie is thrilled that her husband is letting her visit for the summer. However, her husband, Richard’s motives aren’t as pure as they seem. While he may have other plans for Annie and her grandmother, a mysterious painting may have more in store for them than they think.
This is a short novella @20k words...or a long short story.
Tea and Tomahawks edition by Dahlia DeWinters Leanore Elliott Literature Fiction eBooks
Ms. DeWinters manages to capture not only a smooth southern gothic feel but also creates a world of mystical empowerment. Using Annie a wounded, woman, trapped in a horrendous marriage, the author utilizes the powers of family and history to not only strengthen Annie but to free her formerly suppressed will. A well-written tale of subtle terror, even the creepy bits flowed as they stung.I got a great deal from this book, namely information on the Seminole Wars and the role that Afro-Americans played within them. And just as Annie rediscovered herself within the book I felt that I kinda did as well. To say that this book touches on race, would only downplay the power of the narrative but from one woman's oppression, Ms. DeWinters does embody that of a people who must look to their past in order to find their futures. This was a meaty, deep read and definitely a goodread in my opinion.

Tea and Tomahawks edition by Dahlia DeWinters Leanore Elliott Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Tea and Tomahawks is a well written, well told story that invokes the past to help overcome the pains of the present. Recommend
First off I like to say WOW!! The reader meets Annalise at her lowest thinking she is too weak to change her circumstance of living in a domestic violence situation. But her grandmother has a way of empowering her lovely granddaughter into the powerful warrior that she is. I love how the author shows that Annalise has a power from the past and the present to change the future!
This is my first book I have read by Dahlia DeWinters, But it won't be my last. I don't even know we're to start.. How to even put into words what I just read... This book is simply frickin brilliant, creative and magical! This author is very talented with her words.. The way she sets the scenes for you.. I'm in love with this story... You get this, southern goth, paranormal, time travel feel. It's about two different worlds that merge perfectly together. Highly Recommend.
I loved the Gothic tone of this book, along with the inclusion of aspects of history, specifically the Seminole Wars, not found in many stories of this type. I always enjoy when an author is able to blend these successfully and this story is a great example.
DeWinters' story flows seamlessly from modern day, to the 1800s and back again, giving a wonderful Twilight Zone feel to this story. Annie manages to temporarily escape her abusive marriage by staying with her Grandmother over the summer. While there, she spies a painting, hauntingly real, and it becomes another escape, this time into a world where she is wanted, needed, even loved. But does she have the strength to make the dream a reality?
This is a descriptive, immersive book which blends magic and fate to show that we can escape the horrors of everyday life.
I read this review for a challenge over on Instagram, and I am absolutely in love! A dash of history, a dash of romance, and a dash of thrilling action centered around real world problems (however small they might seem to some.) Having never read something by DeWinters before, I was unsure what to expect, and I was oh so pleasantly surprised! This was a quick read, and the time flew by in the best of ways, the story enthralling for every second. )
